Significance of E-Waste

Image
In addition, electronic waste management is also important in ensuring that personal data and information are not misused by certain parties. This is because e-waste often contains sensitive data, including personal information, financial records, and corporate data. Carelessness in disposing of electronic waste can cause your data to be stolen by irresponsible parties for their own benefit. This requires secure disposal methods, such as data wiping or physical destruction of storage devices, that are necessary to protect personal and confidential information. However, it should be done by a professional in order to secure your data before disposing, selling or donating of the e-waste.        E-waste, a hazardous waste containing toxic substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, is divided into two main types: industrial and household e-waste. E-waste is a growing global issue, affecting human health and environmental quality. Proper disposal of e-waste is crucial, a...

Spirituality as Foundation for Sustainability

Image
According to the Islamic viewpoint, spirituality is profoundly rooted in the faith and embraces a wholistic way of living, including environmental care and sustainability. The following are some significant facets of Islamic spirituality that concern sustainability:      The natural world, including the Earth and its riches, is a manifestation of Allah's creation and serves as evidence of His presence and omnipotence, according to Islamic teachings. Muslims are urged to contemplate the harmony and beauty of nature, which inspires awe, thankfulness, and a duty to protect it.      Islamic teachings place a strong emphasis on the idea of Khalifa, which describes humans being chosen to serve as stewards or trustees of the Earth. Muslims hold themselves accountable for preserving the environment's stability and sustainability, making sensible use of its resources, and avoiding waste and excessive consumption. Islamic spirituality ackno...

Maqasid Syariah & Sustainable development

Maqasid Syariah basically promotes realizing human well-being by enhancing the welfare, or benefit (maslahah) of the people and preventing harm (mafsadah) to others.  Conventionally, Maqasid Syariah is the ultimate objective of Shariah is to promote and protect the well-being of people and nature, which lies on maintaining five fundamental objectives of Shariah which are: 1. Hifz al-din (religion) 2. Hifz al-nafs (life) 3. Hifz al-aql (intellect) 4. Hifz al-nasb (lineage) 5. Hifz al-mal (wealth)     The satisfaction of these needs is a basic human right and has been addressed under the generic term Maqasid Shariah. These objectives have a great resemblance to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In Islam, the sustainability of five things (life, faith, intellect, property, and lineage) is considered to be an objective of the law (Maqasid al-Shariah) and Muslims are responsible to ensure the sustenance of these five objectives. ...

Islam and Social Sustainability

As we know that man as Khalifah on earth (vicegerent of Allah)  has a big Amanah which is to govern the earth by implementing Islamic law and prospering the world, living in community and not being hostile to each other. The Amanah concept is the fundamental governance of society. So as Khalifah, we have the responsibility to take care of the Trust given including the trust (Amanah) in ourselves, our family, society and country.      As Muslims, we are supposed to follow the tenets of Islam and the tenets of Iman as the basis for social sustainability, for example, prayer, alms (zakat), fasting, and pilgrimage (hajj) are fardhu ain (individual compulsory) for us to do during our life until we die. Also, the fardhu kifayah concept which is (society compulsory), such as it is compulsory in Muslim society to have at least one expert in every field, medical, engineering, business, and so on, Islam does not ignore the importance of social development....

Islam & Sustainable Development

The shuratic process is the consultation or participatory ruling principle of Islam.         we could classify it into three main points which are Islam & environmental sustainability, Islam & social sustainability an...

Introduction to Sustainable Development

Image
In the very first week, we learned about the introduction to sustainable development which is very important for us to understand its concept first. The three basic concepts of the sustainable measure are:  1) living within certain limits of the earth's capacity to maintain life.   2) understand the interconnections among economy, society, and environment 3) maintaining a fair distribution of resources and opportunities for this generation and the next.            According to Brundtland's report (1987), sustainable development means "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" and advocated the integration of environmental considerations into all aspects of economic and development policy in order to meet this goal.           In my opinion, the sustainable development concept is very importa...
